Pixar Loves Classic Movies

Though some Star Wars fans might consider it a rip-off, I love when filmmakers pay homage to their predecessors in their work—inspiration has to come from somewhere, after all. Pixar is no stranger to this practice, and Madrid-based video editor Jorge Ruiz demonstrates this in a bewitching compilation of the animation studio’s many references to classic films over the years, from Citizen Kane to Chinatown. Some nods are more obvious than others, and a few may seem dubious to some, but it’s still a great video that reminds us, as AV Club puts it, that “inspiration and appropriation are a crucial part of the artistic process, even for the geniuses at Pixar.”
